If you are looking for exciting cuisine made from scratch with exotic ingredients, Kitty's ain't the place.  If you want simple greasy spoon fare at a reasonable price and a relaxed ambiance, this a good place to check out.  Their chicken quesadilla is a bit bland, in true Midwestern fashion, but it was enjoyable and fresh.  The cow-themed decor is fun and went well with the vintage country music.  The cafe was packed with friendly  locals and the service was speedy.

Not too shabby.

Today, I ate at The Shack in Superior,WI. When I purchase a $10 Monte Cristo sandwich, I expect a marvelously melty medley of fruit, meats, cheese and bread blanketed inside a lightly crisp french toast crust. At the Shack, I was insulted a boring and lukewarm, ham, turkey and swiss sandwich with a skimpy and non-descript French toast-like stuff that reminded me of Burger King's "french toast" sticks. Worse yet, the scanty crust turned soggy within minutes of being served. I couldn't finish that mess. It's not a good thing when the "Shack Specialty" sandwich is outshined by its wonderful raspberry dipping sauce or the delightful french fries that accompanied it. The food wasn't helped by the weird ambiance. I cringed as annoyingly cute dance music clashed rather glaringly with a decor that screamed fine dining. No wonder this restaurant was so empty during lunch time.

The only saving grace here is the speedy and very cordial service. Dissapointing.
No leftovers for me...

Want some yummy bread if you're en route to Lake Superior? Stop by at Tobies Restaurant in Hinckley, MN and check out their generous sample table. I just bought some of the most tender English muffins that I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Don't miss Jim's Molasses cookies, with a delightful recipe created by a local baker who is now doing his thing in Sandstone, MN.

Anything that tastes good.  I'm a food fetishist.  Lust is impossible without a proper meal.

China Star

A delicious Chinese buffet chain with incredibly fresh food. The vegetables are wonderfully crisp and the selections were quite diverse. I was annoyed by the general overuse of salt, the idiotic "sushi rolls," and some of the unimaginative renditions of the typical buffet selections. Thankfully there were plenty of fruits, veggies and edible gems to upset the duds. Be sure to try the Bourbon Chicken if you go there. Yellow Chameleon informed me that the location in Minot is far superior to the one in Bismarck, so be aware of that.

New Richmond Stuff:

* Go to Scoops Ice Cream Parlour Rhythm 'N' Riffs Music and order a coneful of Zanzibar chocolate. yum.

* Chickadee Doo-da is a neat and lovely place to buy decorative girly things.

*Hotel-Cafe is not for the girly-girls or the feint of heart, but it sure beats most hostels I've stayed in.

*New Richmond Bowl is nothing to write home about, but, any bowling is good bowling in my book. $1 shoe rental and $2 per game summer specials are nice.

Great Wall Buffet in St. Cloud, MN is nothing special but it is acceptable fast food. It's cheap at less than $8 per person during lunch buffet. Not as much of a bargain for dinner buffet when the food isn't as fresh. Try out their chewy octopus and their yummy teriyaki chicken skewers. Skip their nasty pizza rolls and weird sushi. Loki loved the fried chicken balls and wings. He claimed that the ice cream tasted like sugary clay. The salad bar is dull. The lychees and pineapple in pear juice help save it from being a total snoozefest. Not that great, but nice and predictable if you want a quick meal.

Kettle River Carving Company in Hinckley, MN has fudge so perfect and velvety that one of the owners complained about how difficult it was to cut because it was, "too fresh."

We also enjoyed watching the detailed chainsaw log carvings being made before our eyes by the other owner at his studio next door.

Foodgasm worthy dessert goodness.
