Change cannot be stopped. Success is Inevitable.
In a rare act of political correctness, I am no longer a Lesbian...(?)

It's not what you think.  Vas is still the same abrasive homosexual femme dyke y'all have come to know, but she is no longer a Lesbian.  Confused?  Well, I guess it has to do with the fact that words mean things.

I have no problem using most offensive words on the basis that they exist for the purpose of being used.  I will call people nigger/spic/yid/dago/honky/redskin/bigot/asshole/piece of shit/fluffy bunny/et cetera(s), if they have behaved in a way that earned the title, if they belong to said group and think it's funny, or as a light self-denigrating jab.  I will not use those words lightly or outside of the proper context.  I do have a lot of unease about using groups of people to describe behaviors or states of being that may not be pertinent to who these people really are.  For example:

"I would never jew you out." = "I would never shortchange you."
"What a gyp!" (Will piss my husband off on contact.) = "What a rip-off!"
"Let's go nigger-knocking." = "Let's knock on someone's door and runaway."
"You throw like a girl." = "Your pitch was very weak."
"That's so gay." (My husband says it too much.)  = "That's pathetic."
"You don't look hispanic." = "You're pretty."

After much pondering, the word Lesbian pretty much falls under this troublesome category.  I read this article about the people of Lesbos suing a gay-rights group over the word, a while ago.  At first I thought, it was a frivolous concern, yet as the days passed, the article just haunted me.  I couldn't stop thinking about how horrible the people of Lesbos must feel about having their ethnic name being a label for a stereotype.  I mean seriously. At least "sapphic" refers to a specific person who had a hankering for girl.  "Gay" is a positive stereotypical label because it implies happiness, and in terms of being a sexual minority a predominantly heterosexual society, "queer" doesn't seem unreasonable.  Even "dyke," which is frankly my favored slang term, is based on common behaviors seen among homosexual women.   Getting that out of the way, I must note that not all homosexual women are from the island of Lesbos, and not all Lesbians are gay women.  For this reason there's really no way to defend the word in the context of homosexuality, as anything other than a description for a state of being, pejoratively using a name used to describe a group of people of a certain ethnicity.

Now, I think everyone has the right to use any words they want.  If you want to call yourself or others Lesbians, even if you aren't referring to people of Lesbos, go right ahead.  It's freedom of speech.  I am not the mind police, and it is not my job to judge.  Just don't expect me to participate any further.  I am not going to edit words and art I've done in the past to prevent offense.  That would be intellectually dishonest.  What I can do, is take what I learned and adjust my future behavior accordingly.

Lesbos may be just an island in the Mediterranean and Sapphic may be the more correct way of referencing this, but Sappho and her school did write some of the most beautiful and erotic poetry on that island and it's going to be the most famous part of the history of that island, just like Sparta is always going to be known as the place where the warrior culture allowed its citizens a small room and a minimal of luxury. Your modern Spartan may be just as weighed down with X-Box games and fast food as the next Greek, but that doesn't mean that the word Spartan as in "His room was Spartan with only a poster of Heather Locklear to denote that it was a bedroom and not a hostel." is unfair.

Granted, lesbian has more cultural baggage than Spartan (which is a shame since the Spartans were fucking monsters and lesbians are adorable.) but its a pretty word and it will be many decades before we can get another word comes along to describe women who like to make out with other women but don't particularly like to fix the car.

There's actually a modern Sodom. They rebuilt it a long time ago. There are many stories of how the guy who rebuilt it got punished for it, but there you go. It's a very quiet town. But then again that Biblical story was about gang rape.

No offense, but as far as I know, "spartan" as word came from a fairly accurate description of the military practices of ancient Sparta. The word existed around the 14th and 15th century. Modern Sparta was not reconstructed until the late 19th century. Lesbos (aka Mytilene) never died as the cultural entity, but the word in the sense of homosexuality was a Victorian creation. For this reason, your comparison makes no sense to me.

As for Sodom, hey if it works for the guy, why not.

And Queen Victoria didn't believe in lesbians either way. But the date of the creation of the term isn't so much an issue as what the term says about the place from which it derives its name.

And lesbian is such a great word too. The inhabitants of Lesbos can call themselves Lesbosites or Lesbis if they want to distinguish.

If you don't like the fact that I choose not to use a word for a certain purpose, after I explain my rationale for it, that's just fine. If you missed my point about free speech and your right to use it, in the last paragraph of my blog, I suggest you read it again before you continue to make ass of yourself.

Your are free to continue being an dumbass about it, rather than offering a more substantive argument. However, May I suggest that you continue your dumbass behavior in your blog, where you may or may not, have a more receptive audience? Sound reasonable.

If you want to make fun of me in your blog, I don't mind. You have an amazing talent with scathing humor and I think you're a decent enough person that I know it's not out of malice. Hell, I might even appreciate what you are doing. You can also make intelligent arguments refuting my points. Otherwise, I'm just going to be annoyed at this point and delete any future dumbass comments that you have about this post.

Also telling Lesbians to change their self-identification because the word is used to mean "gay female" is pretty unreasonable. Us dykes stole the word and constantly bitch about "reclaiming the language." We should be women about it, and recognize our blockhead behavior when someone else returns the favor.

Also for the record, I think the word "kike" is a great word. Regardless, I dont think that it is a kind word. Just because it is an interesting word that rhymes with "dyke" it doesn't mean I have to use it in my everyday speech or even find it to be appropriate. Get my drift.

yeh, people tend to get on me sometimes due to some of the terms I use offhandedly (and meaning no offense, either, mind you!). Even my calling people a "jew" has become such an injoke that few people could understand what I mean in the first place (and it no longer even relates to Jew [with a capital J]!).

But I am in total agreement, that those who earn the title I call by the title, I've said before that there's a helluva difference between a black man/african-american and a nigger, just like there's a helluva difference between a spanish-speaking individual [which are not all latin-americans, either!] and a spic or a euro-american [caucasian just sounds... weird] and a redneck/other-POS-white-boy.

I just don't think I'd have such a varied "collection" of friends with such varied skin colourations, beliefs, sexualities, and other oddities/perversions if any of them thought I was the least bit bigoted!
But, yes, I am a bigot... towards bigots, squirrels, and insects/spiders. Go figure?

Amen! People should have the right to say whatever they want, but they need to know what words mean.

"Let's go nigger-knocking." = "Let's knock on someone's door and runaway."

I've never heard that one! In Canadia, we call it "Nicky Nicky Nine Doors."
7th-May-2008 07:24 pm (UTC)
Also known as Ding Dong Ditch.
7th-May-2008 11:25 pm (UTC)
I really like Nicky Nicky Nine Doors! Who would've thunk it. A cultural exchange.

Ding Dong Ditch is familiar to me as well.

I dunno, now I'm all about "Ding Dong Ditch!"

It's so... functional!
8th-May-2008 12:47 am (UTC) - *sigh*
sometimes I miss livin' a mere 5 miles from good ol' Canadia!

ANYways... intriguing, I'd never heard that bit o'slang before! Got any ketchup flavoured chips I can borrow? I love those things! But keep the gravy off my fries!!
8th-May-2008 01:01 am (UTC) - Re: *sigh*
Burger King now makes ketchup-flavored crisps. I know this because I got to promote that product last week. People loved it, especially children and college students.
8th-May-2008 01:10 am (UTC) - Re: *sigh*
I've got Ketchup and Dill Pickle chips... I go into a coma if I don't eat them every 3 days.

And your poutine is missing a critical ingredient: cheese curd!!!

I actually didn't try poutine until a few years ago, as it sounds really, really gross in theory. But, I find that if I get myself drunk enough, I'll try/love anything!

"You don't look hispanic." = "You're pretty."

HA! I've also had this said to me but I think they meant to imply that I didn't look like I would hold up a liquor store or just be ghetto in general. C'est la vie (Latinos know French?! Holy crap!).

7th-May-2008 11:26 pm (UTC)
I've gotten that usage for the word too, even from Mexicans, and it always makes me want to hurt people.

As for the term Latinos... ROFLMAO!!! That is so true.
